To correct an EIN before you submit return, follow these steps:

  1. Go to Federal taxes
  2. Wages and Income
  3. Correct it on the W-2 data entry screen

To make a change after you will need to wait until the return is accepted or rejected.

NOTE: You only need to make the correction if the return is rejected

How do I change an EIN number for an investment ?

It depends.

Typically, you do not need an EIN number for an investment.

The input does have the option of entering an account number under the 1099-B sales information.

You can enter this information as follows in the federal interview section.

  1. Select Income & Expenses
  2. Scroll down through all income until you see Investment income
  3. Select Stocks, Mutual Funds, Bonds, Other
  4. Select Edit to the right of the applicable sale as listed under the section titled Your investment sales summary
  5. You will be able to edit your entries once you select the stock you need to correct

It was rejected because of a single digit mistake (Made by the federal agency I was a retiree of I received their notification of the mistake on the day AFTER I had filed using their incorrect 1099. I am trying to correct it now and refile with the correct 1099 but I don't see any way to do that.
