Hi..I am trying to amend 2020-2022 tax returns, both federal and NY.

The filing instructions say the amended federal return should be mailed out while NY to be electronically filed.  but Turbotax does not seem to support e-filing NY amended returns?

@june0328 No.   Only some paid tax pros using professional tax software can e-file past year returns.  You cannot e-file a past year return using TurboTax.  Mail your amended NY return.

NEW YORK

New York prefers e-filed returns, but there are certain circumstances that make it necessary for you to file your NY return by mail and the state DOES allow mailed returns.    If you could not or did not e-file your federal return then your NY return cannot be e-filed.   It has to be mailed.   It is not possible to e-file any state return if the federal return was not e-filed and accepted by the IRS.

Thanks all for sharing your comments! I am still unsure if TurboTax assists with e-filing NY amended returns for 2020-2022 where the original returns (all jurisdictions) were e-filed/accepted.

Ran into this same problem on TTax 22. The Amended State filing user interface is confusing for NY because of following screens

  • A screen that says TTax 22 efiling window has closed (see below). Presumably this means both Fed+State
  • A screen that says NY require efiling amended tax return if you efiled original return (see below)
  • Steps that actually allow you to go through most of the step of efiling both Fed and NY amended return including signing with entering today's date (see below)
  • Finally at transmission phase, it fails and shows the today's date entered is now between 1/1/22 and 12/31/22 (see below)
  • Furthermore, the printed out amended NY returns doesn't provide any mailing address or directions. I had to consult NY I-201X directions. (see below)

From this post, I see amended return has to be mailed. I realized NY is a special case for TurboTax (require free state efile) Anyway, a few improvements should be made to avoid confusion

  • Disallow letting the user go through efiling steps after it has warned the TTax efiling window is closed.
  • Words saying NY requires efile amended return if original was efiled is probably not true? Even if true, should be noted only while TTax efile window is open.
  • Printed instructions should include mailing address and directions.

Efiling an amended return has been a rollercoaster of what is allowed and when. Currently, you need to mail all amended returns.

For NY instructions, see Amended returns

See Can I e-file my federal Form 1040-X amended return?

NY information on how to amend was recently updated 3/12/2024:

The Tax Department accepts electronically filed amended returns.

How to file an amended return

Complete your amended return as if you are filing the return for the first time.

Submit all the forms relevant to the information in your amended return (even if you already submitted these forms with your original return), such as:

  • forms for any credits you are claiming or amending,
  • forms you submitted as attachments to your original return that are still applicable (for example, IT-196, IT-227, IT-558, IT-201-ATT, or IT-203-ATT), and
  • all your wage and tax statements, such as Form IT-2.

Do not submit a copy of your original Form IT-201, IT-203, or IT-195.

See the instructions for Form IT-201-X or IT-203-X for additional information about what to submit with your amended return.

See the instructions for the form you originally filed (Form IT-201 or Form IT-203) to determine which form to file when amending your return (Form IT-201-X or IT-203-X).
