Erringly entered interest as 1098, but found out no 1098/not a loan secured against home. Return sent/accepted. Should I amend? Wait for IRS to contact us??

I thought the loan on our solar power system was a secured loan/like a second mortgage. I entered it thinking I lost the 1098. Yesterday I found out it is not secure and there is no 1098. (as I said above, it was e-filed and accepted. Should I wait for the IRS to find it and kick it back, or just amend right now?

It is recommended that you amend your return if you realize errors were made when filing your return, rather than waiting for IRS to make a correction.

Unfortunately, since the return was accepted, you will need to amend the return to make any changes.  You will need to wait until you have received your refund, then you can go here and get instructions for amending that return.  Amended returns have to be printed and mailed in and take up to 16 weeks to be processed.

One important note: Before you start the process of amending the return in TurboTax, be sure you have printed a copy of your original return or have saved a PDF copy to your computer.
