Why is my return still pending?

The efile status on TT for my account shows the federal and state were both transmitted on 3/19 and I received the email stating returns were filed and would receive another email within 24-48 hours would show accepted or rejected.
This link you supplied indicates TT may be reviewing still? That it wasn’t actually submitted to IRS or state?  Again the email says it was.
So why would IRS not accept or reject the return within the 48 hours.  I’ve used other online tax services in the past and always received an acceptance email within a few hours.

Pending simply means that your e-filed return is on its way and that the government hasn't accepted or rejected it yet.  Sometimes it can take a bit longer. Continue to check back - If your returns for some reason are Rejected, we will let you know and provide instructions on how to re-submit.

I just received my TT email showing the federal efile was accepted. Hopefully state acceptance won’t be far behind. It took about 80 hours but it’s accepted. Now to wait on the IRS approval and refund!

Yes, it takes up to 21 days from acceptance to receive your refund. The best way to track your refund is through the IRS website Where's My Refund?

My return is also still marked as "pending" despite being past the 48 hours guideline (It has been 72 hours). Is this due to a backlog in IRS or due to an error on my 1040 that I am not aware of? I'm worried as the tax deadline is on Monday.

As long as you filed before the deadline, you are good for the deadline. Your return is time stamped when it was submitted.

It can take longer than normal sometimes, depending on the return itself. @hy2505
