E-filing Second Amendment of California Tax

Hi, I e-filed my California Return in Turbotax Deluxe Desktop and I realized I did not report my HSA Interest. I amended California Tax Report and e-filed the amendment. However, I just realized that part of my HSA Interest was coming from US Government Securities so they are actually exempted from California Tax. I wanted to file a second California Tax Return Amendment, but somehow Turbotax does not show me the option to e-file the second amendment even though the PDF downloaded include "Electronic Filing Instructions for your 2024 California Amended Tax Return" and suggested "Do not mail a paper copy of your tax return." May I ask what should I do? Thanks!

You should be able to amend a second item in your California tax return.

Here are some steps:

Important Note:

For California, you must file your refund claim by the later of:

  • 1 year from the date of overpayment
  • 4 years after the original return due date (if you filed before the due date, after the extension, or made payments and never filed a return)
  • 4 years after the date of a timely filed return, if filed within the extension period

Steps to amend a second time (Prior year, see below)

  1. Go to the Amend screen.
  2. Select Amend (change) return, then Amend using TurboTax Online.
    • If you're told to amend your return via TurboTax Desktop, follow the steps for TurboTax Desktop below instead.
  3. On the screen OK, let's get a kickstart on your 2024 amended return, select The IRS or state sent me a notice (this will allow you to amend only your state return without making changes to your federal) and Continue.
  4. On the next screen, select Something else and Continue.
  5. On the screen Tell us which 2024 return(s) you want to amend, select 2024 state.
  6. Continue until the Let's work on your state taxes screen. Select Amend next to your state return, and continue through the screens to make your amendments.
  7. By the time you get to the Important: Read and Follow Your California Amend Instructions screen in TurboTax, we’ve already transferred info from your federal 1040X to your California amended return.
  8. Move through the following screens to review your info and make any needed changes.
  9. On the Confirm Previous Refund or Tax Paid screen, review the amount(s) provided and update if necessary, then Continue.
  10. On the About Your California Amended Return screen, you’ll see the form for your amended return.
    • Scroll through and review your info.
    • Answer any questions that may still need to be answered.
    • Select Continue.
  11. On the Let's Make Sure You're Ready to Review screen, choose Yes, I’ve entered everything and let’s review, and Continue.
    • If you have additional info to enter, choose No, I still have state amend info to enter and move through the screens.
  12. At this point, we'll check your California amended return for any info that needs to be reviewed. If we find something, select Fix Return on the Let's make sure everything is accurate screen and update the requested info.
    • If you then see an option to Run Smart Check, run it again to ensure you didn’t miss any info.
  13. Follow the onscreen instructions to finish and file your return.

Note: Be sure to save a copy of your amended tax return. You'll transfer your amended info to next year's version of TurboTax.

Thank you! On step 5 "Tell us which 2024 return(s) you want to amend", I can only see the choice "2024 Federal return". May I ask why that is the case? Thanks!

On step 4, did you answer positively to "the state sent me a notice"? The state didn't, but my guess is that this will answer why in step 6 (I assume you meant 6 and not 5) your only choice was federal and not state. In any case, this is just to move the amendment process along.

In your case, you definitely do not need to amend the federal but only the state.
