My 2020 e-file failed, "The only way for your e-file to get accepted is to use the AGI that is on your 2019 tax return". I used TurboTax last year, so it should have copied the right value (and I've confirmed it). However, via the IRS return transcript link, states "no tax return filed" for 2019. IRS has the record of the 7/15/2020 tax payment made, and my whole 2019 transcript account is a net credit. So I have TurboTax email from 7/15/2020 stating "Your federal tax return was accepted by the IRS." Several questions: 1) Do I have to print out the 2020 return and mail it in as my most effective way forward? 2) Alternately, does TurboTax have the capability to assure my 2019 return is filed so my 2020 return can be e-filed? 3) This service now costs me over $150 each year, and I am dismayed to find out the final step I paid you to do in 2020 for 2019 taxes includes a status email that I cannot reconcile with my current apparent status. What could have happened that TurboTax sent an email 7/15/2020 with a report of success, that has led to this scenario where I apparently did not file 2019 taxes and only discovered it on attempt to complete 2020 taxes?
If it was rejected for AGI—-be aware that many 2019 returns took so long for the IRS to process that your 2019 AGI might not be in the IRS system. Try using zero instead.
If filing with zero is rejected then file again but select the option that you did not file last year. The IRS does not see that question and it will allow you to e-file with no AGI question.
Or—-if you filed as a “non-filer” just to get the stimulus check on a 2019 return, try using $1 as the AGI.

If that does not work and you still cannot e-file, then print, sign, and mail your tax return.
