Can the IRS keep holding my tax return without cause? It’s been much longer than 21 days they accepted my return from Turbo Tax.

Turbo Tax checked my taxes and the It’s accepted them. It’s been past 21 days by 2 weeks now and all they will say is that it’s taking longer than normal to process. They aren’t saying there is anything wrong with the return just that it’s taking longer to process. What gives?!

TurboTax is not informed about the status of your return once it has been accepted by the IRS.  Turbotax does not issue refunds.  All refund inquiries should be maid to the IRS.  Most likely the IRS is handling some issue prior to issuing the refund.

The 21-day timeframe is only a target set by the IRS.  Because of other issues, the timeframe may be extended.

If accepted by the state use this TurboTax support FAQ to check the state tax refund status

After the tax return has been Accepted by the IRS (meaning only that they received the return) it will be in the Processing mode until the tax refund has been Approved and then an Issue Date will be available on the IRS website.
