Can I still file my 1098-T form that I didn't file in 2019 this year?

I just e-filed my taxes this year, and I put in my 2020 1098-T form this time and saw that I am receiving a much bigger tax return. My question is, I did not file my 1098-T form last year, so my 1098-T form from 2019, am I still able to file that form still for this year? Also, because I have already e-filed my taxes for this year, if I can file my last year's 1098-T form, how would I go on to adjust or add it onto this year's tax filing? Thank you!

You can still file your 2019 1098-T, however, you cannot include it on your 2020 income tax return.

You must file an amended 2019 income tax return to claim the education credits for 2019.

thank you for the answer! I realized I havn't filed my 1098-T form for years 2017-2019. Would I be able to file those years by amending my tax returns?

Yes, you can file amended income tax returns for 2017-2019.  You have 3 years from the date the income tax return was due to file for a refund.

Here is some information regarding education credits to help you determine which credits you are eligible for.

American Opportunity Tax Credit (AOTC)

You can use this credit for the first four years of college when working towards a degree.

  • The maximum credit is $2,500 per eligible student.
  • Must be enrolled at least half time for at least one semester during the tax year.
  • Up to $1,000 can be refunded to you.

Lifetime Learning Credit

There is no limit on the number of years you can use this credit for undergraduate, graduate, and professional degree courses, including ones to improve job skills.

  • The maximum credit is $2,000 per tax return.
  • Can be used when you're only taking one class.
  • You don't need to be working towards a degree.
  • None of the credit is refundable.
