You cannot change or add anything on the return that you just e-filed, nor can you stop it. It is too late, just like when you put an envelope in a US mailbox on the corner. The IRS does not allow you to take it back.
If you left out a W-2, a 1099G, or a dependent, or a 1099 etc…DO NOT change your return while it is “pending.” The changes will go nowhere.
Now you have to wait until the IRS either rejects or accepts your return. If your return is rejected, you will be able to go into your account and make the necessary changes to your tax return and re-submit your return.
If the IRS accepts your return, however, then you have to wait longer until it has been fully processed and you have received your refund. THEN you can prepare an amended tax return and e-file or mail it in. You have to be able to work from that return exactly the way it was when it was e-filed originally. You will need to use a form called a 1040X.
Meanwhile, DO NOT go in and start changing anything on your return in the system, or you will make a mess for yourself. Sit tight and wait until you see what the IRS does with the return you just e-filed
You need to wait until you receive your taxes before you do an amendment.
Both posts above are correct, but I would add that you should wait until after you get your refund, but definitely should not wait until after April 15.
If you wait that long you may have to pay back part of your refund and would penalized for not paying in full by April 18.
Same question but different circumstances. I filed showing I owe, but my amended return will flip that to a refund. Do I need to wait until I have paid until amending? At that point will the IRS process my refund and refund the incorrect payment?
Since you owe on your Federal 1040 tax return, you may want to view your transcript to make sure that your 2021 Federal 1040 tax return has been posted correctly. See this IRS FAQ for more information.
TurboTax online amended tax returns are expected to be available March 17. See forms availability here.
But remember, if your return has been transmitted and rejected by the IRS, you can correct your tax return and re-transmit.
If your return has been transmitted and accepted by the IRS, you must amend your Federal 1040 tax return.
It's been accepted. My only question is when to amend based on having already scheduled the amount I owe per the incorrect return to process on 4/18? If I amend prior to that and see that I am entitled to a refund, how does that impact the scheduled payment?
Since you owe on your original return, and your original e-filed return has been accepted, you can go ahead and amend your return.
Your scheduled payment should be unaffected, but you can call IRS e-file Payment Services 24/7 at 1-888-353-4537 to inquire about or cancel your payment. Please wait 7 to 10 days after your return was accepted before calling.
The IRS advises in What taxpayers should know about amending a tax return that taxpayers with a refund on their original return wait for the refund before filing an amended return, but makes no similar suggestion relating to amending a balance-due original return.
[Amended 2/10/2022 | 4:57 am PST]
You can amend your return after it has been Accepted. Please see the Help Article here to assist you with this process. The 20211040-X isn't available yet on TurboTax, but will show up in a link when ready.
MY 2021 RETURN HAS BEEN FILED, ACCEPTED BY THE IRS, AND MY REFUND WAS RECEIVED A FEW WEEKS AGO.
YOU SEEM TO BE SAYING THAT I CAN NOW FILE AN AMENDED RETURN, BUT TURBO TAX WILL NOT ALLOW ME TO DO IT AS OF TODAY, FEBRUARY 17, 2022.
"The IRS is still working on finishing up the amended return area for 2021. That means this area isn't quite ready yet.
Check back soon and we will help you finish up."
You need a Form 1040X to amend ---- and it will not be available until mid-March. You have to wait.
