Are others having problem with trying to amend 2023 tax return? I selected New Tax Return on Home & Business but it's not pulling in 2023 tax file.

I selected Amend a Return > Continue. I enter "yes" when asked if already filed my return. Then I select "I need to amend my 2023 return". It then open screen asking me what I want to update, but at no time does it ever pull in my 2023 data.

If you want to make changes or add a document to a tax return that has already been filed and accepted by the taxing agency, you should follow these guidelines.

  • You must first wait until the initial return is completely processed.
  • You will have to use the same TurboTax account that you used for the original tax return.
  • Once you begin your amendment, you'll see your original return.
  • The refund calculator will start new at $0 and only reflect the changes in the refund or tax due
  • Only make changes to the areas of your return that need to be corrected.
  • You have three years from the date you filed your return or two years after you paid the tax due (whichever is later) to file an amendment

Select your product below and follow the instructions.

Thank you for the response. The problem I'm having though is that it the desktop software is not actually loading my 2023 taxes. It's telling me I have no data on my 1040, which is of course, incorrect.

Can you clarify if the account you are trying to amend your 2023 return is the same account you filed your 2023 return with?

Open your 2023 Home & Business program.   Then go to Federal>Other Tax Situations>Other Tax Forms>Amend a Return

I am having a problem amending my 2023 return.   After I say I wnt to amend, the Federal Tax due changes to over $10000 and I have not put any new info in.  Any idea why this is happening.  I called

TurboTax support and they were not able to figure out why either.

If you're using TurboTax Desktop for 2023, when you open the program, you should see your return shown, and you can select Continue your 2023 return.  Then go to 'Other Tax Situations' and select 'Amend a Return'.  TurboTax may ask you if you want to amend your return.

In TurboTax Online, scroll down to 'Add a State' to get back into your return, after selecting 2023 at the home page under 'My documents and returns'.

I am trying to do the same thing (amend 2023 return) and don't get a prompt to load prior file.

- I select amend a return (in Turbotax 2023)

- It goes to the screen 'we'll help you change (amend) your return'

- I select the prompt I have already filed 2023, then the prompt I need to amend my 2023 returs.

- From there it asks for first name and makes me start filling out all the information as if I am filling out a new return - never prompting me to bring up the return to edit it.

What else can I do? I have opened the prior year return and could not find a prompt that says Amend this return.

I finally figured this after randomly mucking around in Turbo Tax. From the 2023 software open your 2023 return and then go to "Check E-file Status" at the top and then make sure that it updates to show that all your returns have been accepted. Once that happens, then if you go back to start a new return, and click the option in the middle that says "amend a new return", the software should recognize and pull in your 2023 return.
