Apply ITIN for my wife. How long will it take ?

I have an SSN. I want to apply for an ITIN for my wife.We have been in US only since Nov 2013. I want to apply - "Married. applying jointly'.
I read the forums that, i need to apply for ITIN by filling up the W7 form along with the attested copies of passport (proof that she's a foreign national), which is ok. I wanted to know, how long will it take to get the ITIN for my wife ? Weeks or Days ?

You need to apply for the ITIN together with your return and send it to the ITIN operations center.

See the instructions of form W7.

Form W7:

www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fw7.pdf

Instructions for Form W7:

www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/iw7.pdf

Once the ITIN is assigned, they will forward your return for processing and send you a letter with the ITIN.

Getting the ITIN takes about 6 weeks. Processing the return can take another month or two.

How and when can I expect to receive my ITIN?
If you qualify for an ITIN and your application is complete, you will receive a letter from the IRS assigning your tax identification number usually within six weeks. If you have not received your ITIN or other correspondence six weeks after applying, call the IRS toll-free number at 1-800-829-1040 to request the status of your application if you are in the United States. If you are outside the United States, call 267-941-1000 (not a toll-free number).

I filed my federal return on Feb 7th along with ITIN application. I received return on March 25th but since then I am waiting for ITIN. Its been almost 10 weeks now. Should I be worried?

IRS doesn’t accept e-file, since you are applying for the ITIN. So, you have to
send these forms (w7 and Federal return 1040 form) by post or by visiting any IRS center. First you will get ITIN number in 6-10 weeks by post from IRS, then IRS will directly deposit you federal tax refund in 4 weeks after that.

I submitted my docs on 22nd February and received the ITIN for my wife and child on 28th March through post. Now waiting for Federal return. Not sure how to check the status of my refund in this case

Hello,

I filed MFJ with my husband who needed an ITIN. We recently received our tax refund but no ITIN.

What can we do?

If you attached Form W-7 to your tax return before filing, the ITIN application is processed and an ITIN is assigned before the tax return is processed.  I would assume the ITIN section's notices to taxpayers advising them of their ITIN are delayed due to the virus.

Your tax return is usually processed about 6 weeks after your ITIN is assigned.  If you have received your refund, that is a good sign.

See below from the IRS How do I apply for an ITIN?

You will receive a letter from the IRS assigning your tax identification number usually within seven weeks if you qualify for an ITIN and your application is complete.

Hi All,

I applied for the ITIN for my wife and kids on Feb 18th 2020 and filed my federal tax return along with it physically in the IRS office. Its almost 7 weeks and we haven't received the ITIN or the returns until now. Tried calling the IRS toll free number but the offices are closed due to COVID-19. Should I be worried ?

You can call the IRS toll-free at 800-829-1040 if you are in the United States or 267-941-1000 (not a toll-free number) if you are outside the United States. This service allows you to check the status of your application seven weeks after submitting Form W-7 and your tax return.

Hi

I have to send my daughter's passport with W-7 application( to apply ITIN number) as well as my federal tax return. I wonder IRS Austin Service Center is closed due to COVID-19? I called IRS number but no one answer due to COVID- 19. If I send a passport, they will do process  W-7 application?

I would not recommend sending the passport until you get confirmation that the ITINs are actively being processed and the Austin TX service center is operational- you may need the passport for travel,

See if you can find a certified acceptance agent when they open in a couple of weeks ... look at option 2 ...

If I take option 2( instead send a passport ), I have to wait couple weeks or month since most authorized agent office close now due to COVID-19.

If I send a W-7 with tax return in late May/June.  It takes 60 days to get ITIN number .

How I can e-file ( without my daughter's ITIN number ) NY state return which due is July 15 ?

If I do not own NY state( refund position), is it fine to e-file after July 15? Are there any late penalty  if file NY state return after July 15?

If I send a W-7 with tax return in late May/June.  It takes 60 days to get ITIN number .  With this virus situation I would not bet on the usual 60 days.

How I can e-file ( without my daughter's ITIN number ) NY state return which due is July 15 ?  Do NOT file a fed or state return without the ITIN ... file EXTENSIONS instead.

If I do not own NY state( refund position), is it fine to e-file after July 15? Are there any late penalty  if file NY state return after July 15?   Again file  extensions ... even if you get a refund.

You do need to file the federal return without the ITIN together with the application (that is true if you go to an acceptance agent or send in the application). If you send in the W7 application, do not send the original passport. You might not get it back or get it back after a very long time.

Some states allow filing without an ITIN and then you provide that number later. Not sure about NY. So apply for an extension. However, efiling might still not work right after you get the ITIN, as the databases do not necessarily update immediately.

I have Turbo tax CD, Can I e-file Extension form 4868?  No total liability.

In Turbo Tax FAQ, I see, Turbo Tax D software: follow these instructions to print Form 4868. Even I click "Form 4868" , it does not go anywhere.  How I can find form 4868 in Turbo Tax CD version?

Also, do I need to file NY states extension? Or Federal Extension cover for NY state extension and no need to file state extension?

The easiest way to file the extension is to use TurboTax Easy Extension.  See Can IRS extensions be e-filed?  The New York extension MUST be filed separately, so please use the link within the link to get the information on HOW to file the New York extension.

I filed Federal extension via File a Free Extension in Turbo Tax website. And I received a email from Turbo Tax "your 2019 Federal Personal Extension has been approved!". How I can get a confirmation sheet of approval?

Print the email ... that is the ONLY confirmation you will get.

This is my first year to file US tax return.

My dependent does not have social security number and I will apply ITIN(taxpayer identification number) with paper filling W-7 and my federal tax return.  Filling status is Head of household. I can not file my federal tax return now since I have to get signature for W-7. I am waiting IRS offices re-open( option 2 or option 3 to get a signature at  IRS office).

IT-203 Item I dependent information- Do I need to enter ITIN in space "Social Security number "?

I wonder If I can leave it as blank.  If I have to enter ITIN, I have to wait to receive her ITIN since IRS offices are closed due to COVID-19.

If I do not need to enter ITIN, can I file NY state return before I paper file my federal tax return?

You should wait to file your IT-203 until you have the number.  Since each of these items may take some time, I recommend you go ahead and and file these forms - extensions of time to file.  This will allow you until October 15, 2020 to get these things accomplished.
