amending federal return doesn't reset to values to 0 for federal but does for state

I see that the latest download seems to allow for the amending of a 2022 federal return.

I am trying to add a 1099-R for a direct rollover, and in fact it shouldn't affect any of the key tax numbers. But when I start the Amending process, the values reflected on my amended form are incorrect, and they show that I should receive a refund.

At the screen "We'll help you amend a return," the numbers reflect my initial filing, which were refunds for federal and state amounts. But after I answer that I have filed my return, and that it's 2022 that I want to amend, TurboTax shows a federal refund of $4,447 and a state refund of $0.

So, even before I start the process, my 1040X is out of whack. I have been poking around with resetting the values to exactly match my previous values, but that seems fraught to me. It seems like a bug in the program, or a problem in my already filed return, which seems less likely, unless it's a hidden problem.

All the Forms needed to complete your Amended Return is not yet released by the IRS.

The release date is February 23rd.

Here is some information on how to Amend:

@HopeS

Thank you. I will try again when the next version is released. The notification in the product said that it would be ready on February 16, so I took that as gospel. 🙂

If you did a nontaxable rollover, no amounts will change on your 1040-X if you add that in.

If you e-File 1040-X, TurboTax will resend your entire tax return.

don't waste your 1040-X e-File on a no-change return, you may need it in a month or two if you find some real error.

@HopeS

I tried once again to amend my return, and still the values for the federal form 1040X do not reset to 0 when I start the process. The program's behavior has given me the sense that it's a difficult process to amend a return, at least in my case. I can edit all the original numbers on the form to match the original values, but that seems like a bug to me. So now I'm worried that the submission of the amended form will fail.

I decided to go with what @fanfare  suggested, and not amend, since the 1099-R is for a non-taxable rollover, and it doesn't affect my tax owed or paid. But somehow, although I was careful, I saved or TurboTax saved for me. Now I am trying to roll back the amend process. I found steps for undoing an amended return on the TurboTax site, first the Federal, and then the CA forms. And for federal it worked. For CA, I was able to remove the X form, but at some point I clicked to transfer the reason for the amendment, and that little bit of code is embedded somewhere in my tax file. I can see nothing in the forms view for this little bit of information, but I can tell that it's there, because the CA step-by-step thinks I am amending the return.

If you have any thoughts on how I might clear that lingering value, let me know. Otherwise, I will just leave my 2022 tax file as is, somewhat half baked.
