Already e-filed but realized I made a mistake in the amount on SSA-1099.

I already e-filed my taxes and owe that will be direct debited on 4/15/2024. I realized I transfered the wrong amount from our SSA-1099's (mine and my spouse's). I filed with a lesser amount. Do I wait until after the IRS debit's my payment to do an amended return or if I do it now will they debit the newer amount? This sounds kind of crazy but?

Thank You

Wait for the debit to be processed before filing an amended return.

An amended return, Form 1040-X, can only be printed and mailed to the IRS if the original tax return was not e-filed. The IRS will take up to 20 weeks or longer to process an amended tax return.

See this TurboTax support FAQ for amending a tax return - https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-return/amend-change-correct-return-already-filed/L4VjJ9BA2_US_en_US?uid=ld1n99kr

Yes wait for the IRS to process your return and debits your payment.  They might catch it and fix it for you.  But you may not need to amend.  How much is on 1040 line 6b for taxable Social Security?   Is it zero?

The original return was e-filed. Should I e-file the amended return also?

The 2023 amended return can be e-filed if the original tax return was e-filed.
