2018 and 2019 issues

My daughter filed her 2018 refund last year. As she hadn't worked that long and didn't make very much, we opted to send the info through the mail. We never received her refund and figured it must have been stolen from our mailbox. Her life was more than crazy at that time so I honestly don't know that she received any emails letting her know of the status of her return. We don't know if it was rejected, or if as we thought it was stolen.

This year we've tried several times to submit the refund electronically. It's been sent back each time saying the PIN doesn't match last years or it's the AGI. We know for certain the AGI is fine, but we don't understand why it won't let her efile as she didn't have a pin from the previous year since we chose to snail mail it. Now we're past the point of being able to efile again even though the date has been changed.

Can anyone recommend a course of action? We've tried going to the IRS.gov site, but due to this not so lovely virus no one is available to help us out. I don't know if the issue is with the IRS itself or with the TurboTax program.

You can efile 2019 until Oct 15.  Try using 0 for the 2018 return. Maybe the IRS never got 2018 or they got it later in the year.

I didn't say that right.  Try using zero 0 for the 2018 AGI to efile 2019.  If that doesn't work you will have to print and mail 2019.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS received the return. Don’t forget state.

Important! Mail Federal and State in separate envelopes and mail each year in separate envelopes.

By the way, They are not processing mailed returns right now.

You now have a problem.  You have to file each year separately.  Online is only for 2019.  You have to wait and see if your efile gets accepted.   If they reject it for something you can change it around to be only for 2019

But if they accept it you need to wait some more for it to fully process and you get the first refund.  Then you need to Mail in an Amended 1040X return to change it to be for 2019.

You can check your efile status here   https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/efile-status-lookup/

Amended returns can only be MAILED not efiled.

Then if you still need to do 2018.  To do 2018 you have to buy the Desktop Download program here

Or If you have a simple return You can fill out the blank forms for free.

Don’t forget your state.  And you will have to print and mail your returns.  So be sure to attach copies of your W2s and any 1099s that have withholding on them.  You have to mail federal and state in separate envelopes because they go to different places.  Get a tracking number from the post office when you mail them for proof of filing.
