Can I deposit my tax refund into someone else's account?

by TurboTax38 Updated 1 month ago

While the IRS doesn't have any specific rules against depositing your refund into someone else's account, it's generally not recommended.

Banks often have fraud prevention measures in place that prevent direct deposits into accounts with different names.

If you enter someone else’s account information, the bank may reject the IRS’s direct deposit request. This is because the name on the refund (yours) won’t match the account holder’s name.

The IRS will have to reprocess your refund, issue a check, and mail it to you. You'll get your refund, but it will take longer than if you had requested a check refund initially.
