If you owe additional taxes when you file your return, select Pay by check when asked how you want to pay in the File section.
- Make your check or money order out to United States Treasury
- Make sure these four items are on the front of the check or money order:
- Social Security number (or ITIN)
- Taxpayer's name
- Your mailing address
- Daytime phone number
- Mail the check or money order to the IRS, along with Form 1040-V, postmarked by the April 18, 2022 tax filing deadline to avoid the late payment penalty. We'll prepare Form 1040-V for you
The address to mail your payment will be on your Form 1040-V. You can also get it on page 2 of the IRS 1040-V instructions.
Tip: Even if you selected the check payment option, you can still make an electronic payment to the IRS instead of sending a check.
