How do I fix e-file reject IND-524?

SOLVEDby TurboTax607Updated 2 weeks ago

E-file rejection IND-524 happens when the date of birth for the first person listed on your return doesn't match IRS records.

First, get a copy of your 2023 Form 1040 and find the first person listed. (If you filed by yourself, you'll be the only person on your return.) Then, find an official document like your birth certificate, passport, or driver's license, to ensure you have the correct date.

Select your version of TurboTax below for instructions and be sure to enter the date in the standard U.S. format of MM/DD/YYYY.

  1. Sign in to TurboTax Online and select Fix my return.
  2. On the screen Let's fix your returns and then refile, select Fix it now or Revisit.
  3. Compare the information on the Fix date of birth mismatch screen with what's on your birth certificate.
    • If there's a difference, select No. On the next screen, enter your date of birth in the format of MM/DD/YYYY and select Continue.
    • If the date of birth shown is correct, select Yes. We'll help you print and mail in your return as you won't be able to e-file.
  4. Select Continue when you're finished and then select Continue to refile.
  1. Open your return in TurboTax and select Fix my return.
  2. On the screen Welcome back to TurboTax screen, select Fix it now.
  3. Compare the information on the next screen with what's on your birth certificate.
    • If there's a difference, select No. On the next screen, enter your date of birth in the format of MM/DD/YYYY and select Continue.
    • If the date of birth shown is correct, select Yes. We'll help you print and mail in your return as you won't be able to e-file.
  4. Follow the screens to continue filing your return.

You'll need to leave the TurboTax Mobile App and sign in to TurboTax Online in a browser:

  1. Sign out of the app by selecting the menu icon, then Sign Out.
  2. Open your browser (either on your device or a computer) and sign in at myturbotax.com (use your app login).
  3. Fix and refile your return in TurboTax Online using the previous instructions.

If the birthdate listed is correct, most likely the IRS has the wrong date of birth on file. In this case, you won't be able to e-file, because the date you're entering doesn't match their records.

Follow the steps under TurboTax Online or TurboTax Desktop, but select File by mail on the Let’s get ready to e-file screen, to print and mail your return.

Note: To prevent this rejection next year, call the Social Security Administration (SSA) at 1-800-772-1213 to verify their records (this is where the IRS database pulls from). If the info is wrong, please allow 4–6 weeks for correction.
