The IRS offers the ability to access personal tax information and documents, including Form 1040 tax transcripts, Identity Protection PINs, and Wage and Income documents (W-2, 1099, 1098) directly on their website for those who have an ID.me account.
To create a new ID.me account, you'll need to verify your identity. The IRS offers two ways to do this:
A photo of your government ID and a selfie, or
A live video chat with an ID.me agent
To get started, make sure you have:
Email address
Photo ID: U.S. driver's license, state ID, passport, or passport card
Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN)
Smartphone or Computer: Must have a front-facing camera
Mobile Phone Number: For receiving security codes
Steps to create your ID.me account
Visit IRS.gov and select Sign in or Create account.
Select ID.me Create an Account.
Register with ID.me by entering your email address and creating a password.
Confirm your email address.
Verify identity by uploading a picture of your government-issued photo ID (driver's license, passport, or state ID) and take a live selfie using your phone or webcam.
Secure your account by setting up multifactor authentication (MFA) to protect your account.
Once your account creation is complete, you'll be redirected to the IRS website.
If you already have an ID.me account from another government agency, you can use those credentials to sign in to your IRS account.
