How do I amend my 2025 tax return to correct the home office expense?
Due to an error in TurboTax, some customers were not given the option to select actual home office expenses. When customers selected that the home office was not their principal residence, the program blocked them from the actual expense pages. As a result, expenses were incorrectly reported on the tax return.
If we notified you, we recommend you review your return and amend as soon as possible.
To correct your return, follow the steps below:
Use TurboTax to amend your federal tax return and, if applicable, your state tax return.
Under What do you need to change on your return? select Business.
Navigate to your Business Income and Expenses, Schedule C and select Update.
Under Business Expenses, find Home Office Expense and select Update.
Continue until you reach How do you want to enter your home office expenses for 2025?
Continue by entering your actual expenses.
Under Why did you need to amend your return? enter “TO CORRECT HOME OFFICE EXPENSE” as the explanation.
Navigate back to What do you need to change on your return?
Select Done or, if applicable, find State return and select Update.
Follow the instructions provided by TurboTax to e-file the amended tax return.
Note: In some cases due to a change in tax credits, there may be a balance due. Please be sure to remit payment.
For the state amended return,
If you live in these states, follow the TurboTax instructions to efile your amended state return.
Otherwise, you will need to print, date and sign the amended return and mail it to the address included in the TurboTax instructions.
Save a copy of the amended tax return(s) for your records.
