How do I amend my 2023 North Carolina state tax return to correct my Other Income allocation?
Due to a TurboTax error, some customers have underpaid their North Carolina taxes. In some cases, the other state tax return(s) might be impacted as well.
If we notified you, we recommend you submit an amended state tax return(s) as soon as possible to avoid additional penalties and interest on the unpaid balance.
Please select your version of TurboTax below and follow the instructions.
- Write down the original refund or balance due amount for your North Carolina income taxes and any resident state tax return filed. We recommend you check the paper/PDF copy of your returns, or your banking records to verify the correct amount.
- Log in to the TurboTax account where you prepared your 2023 return. In Tax Home, scroll down to Your tax returns & documents, and choose 2023. If you have not already done so, we recommend that you print a copy of your original 2023 tax return for your records by selecting Download/print return (PDF).
- Select Amend (change) return and then select Amend Using TurboTax Online.
- On the OK, let’s get a kickstart on your 2023 amended return screen, choose TurboTax sent me an email, then Continue.
- On the What did we contact you about? screen, choose Something else then Continue.
- On the Tell us which 2023 return(s) you want to amend screen,
- If filing a nonresident North Carolina return, select 2023 North Carolina return and your 2023 Resident return. Then Continue. The refund meters will reset to -0-. This is normal.
- If filing a part-year resident North Carolina return, select 2023 North Carolina return. Then Continue. The refund meters will reset to -0-. This is normal.
- On the Let’s get your state taxes done right screen, select Continue.
- On the Let’s amend your state taxes screen, select Amend next to North Carolina.
- On the Your 2023 North Carolina Return screen, select Continue.
- On the Let’s Amend Your North Carolina Return screen, select Yes, let’s amend and get it done (Recommended), then Continue.
- On the Reasons to change a return screen, select Additional income (including W-2, 1099, or K-1). Then Continue.
- On the About Your North Carolina Amended Return screen, enter “TO ALLOCATE OTHER INCOME TAXABLE IN NORTH CAROLINA” as the explanation for amending.
- On the Confirm Your Previous North Carolina Refund or Tax Paid screen, enter the amount you wrote down in step 1 as either the original refund or balance due amount. Then select Continue.
- On the Your North Carolina Amended Return screen, select Continue.
- On the Let’s Make Sure You’re Ready to Review screen, select Yes, I’ve entered everything and let’s review, then Continue.
NOTE: If you are only amending your part-year North Carolina return, skip to step 22. Otherwise continue with step 16.
- On the Smart Check Results screen, select Continue.
- On the Let’s amend your state taxes screen, select Amend next to the Resident state.
- On the Your 2023 Resident Return screen, select Continue.
- On the Let’s Amend Your Resident Return screen, select Yes, let’s amend and get it done (Recommended), then Continue.
- On the Reason for Amending Tax Return screen, enter “TO CORRECT THE OTHER STATE TAX CREDIT” as the explanation of the changes. Then Continue.
- On the Let’s Make Sure You’re Ready to Review screen, select Yes, I’ve entered everything and let’s review, then Continue.
- On the Ready to Review Your State Return screen, select Continue.
- On the Smart Check Results screen, select Continue, then Continue again.
- On the Let’s get your return ready to file screen, select Check my return. Then Skip recap.
- On the Time to put it all together for one last look screen, select Continue.
- On the Great job so far! screen, select Continue.
- On the Just one more step and we’ll file your return screen, follow the instructions to efile your North Carolina amended return. Please remember to remit the balance due.
- If you cannot electronically file the resident return, if applicable, follow the TurboTax instructions to print, sign, date and mail the amended resident return.
NOTE: Be sure to Print and Save the amended return for your records.
