Your tax breaks are separate from your federal check?

No, your income and deductions (tax breaks) are all factored into your refund check or tax due.

You don't get tax breaks back.  They are subtracted from your income before the tax is calculated so you get taxed on a lower amount.  You don't pay tax on that part of your income.
