I live & work in Michigan, but worked in Missouri for 2 weeks for a company that's based in Illinois. The W2 from that company took out state taxes for Illinois. Who do I file for under other states worked for, Illinois or Missouri?
Illinois. You'll need to file a non-resident return for Illinois to get any taxes with held back from them.
Thank you Robert. I have done that now, but after filling everything out as a non-resident, its only giving me back $113 out of $411 I have paid in. Illinois and Michigan are reciprocal states, shouldn't I be getting everything back?
Yes, since the tax withholding is Illinois (IL) and there is a reciprocal agreement with Michigan, all state tax withheld for IL should be refunded. Make sure to do the nonresident return first, then the resident return.
Review your entries again and make sure the income taxed to IL is zero. You could put zero wages in the W2 for IL and this may eliminate the income for that state. It's all right to make this change if necessary to accomplish and accurate return.
