Worked Full-Time (W2) and Freelanced (1099-NEC) | Married File Jointly or Separate for 2020

Hello,

For 2020 I worked full time (W2) and did some freelancing work for 2 months (1099-NEC). I'm married and always file jointly using TurboTax Premier. We have been using TurboTax for many years.

I have 2 months of expenses to write off for the freelancing work so I know those need to be itemized.

For filing jointly do I use the Turbo Tax Self-Employed (online) for both personal and business? Or since this is the first year have the live CPA?

Thanks,

You will need to use TurboTax Self-Employed to prepare a Schedule C to claim your expenses for your freelance work.  Your information from Premier will transition to Self-Employment so you will not need to reenter it.  Your expenses will reduce your freelance income that is subject to both self-employment tax and income tax.  If you did your freelance work from a home office, you may also be able to claim a home office deduction for some of your home expenses.  You can begin to enter your freelance income and expenses  in TurboTax Self-Employed here:
