Worked all year in the U.S. except for a two week trip to Africa to train anesthesiologists there in our techniques. Do I check the box for "worked outside of the u.s."

I guess this is like when a university sends a professor to a foreign conference.

Employed in the U.S. but sent to work abroad for a short, temporary period.

I would not check the box that you worked outside the country as your trip was only for 2 weeks.  I assume the income you earned was included in your US W-2. 

However if you did receive any foreign wage income with foreign tax withheld, you should report  the income as foreign income and you can claim foreign tax credit on the US return to help offset double taxation.  You would need to use the appropriate exchange rate as the income must be translated to USD.
