Will my federal credit go towards what I still owe from 2017?

If, by credit, you mean that you have a federal refund for 2018 and you still owe taxes for 2017 - then, yes, the IRS will apply your 2018 refund to the amount you owe for 2017.  If there is any leftover, they will send you the balance.
