Will I need a electronic filing personal identification number (PIN) number to file my taxes this year and is that a PIN provided by ID.me?

An Identity Protection PIN is a 6 digit PIN provided by the IRS due to the taxpayer reporting some type of identity theft or just requesting the IP PIN.  The IP PIN is not required to e-file a tax return if you never received an IP PIN from the IRS.

I have a six digit pin, but the form only allows five digits to be entered.  What the heck is happening    I keep getting rejected.

There are two different pins that you will need to enter in your return.  One is the 5-digit PIN is a that is entered in the File section of the program.  This PIN is used every year to e-file your return, and you use the same number every year.

The IP PIN is a number that the IRS typically issues an IP PIN in known cases of identity fraud. If your return was rejected because you need to enter your IP PIN you can, get your IP PIN online at the IRS's Get an IP PIN site, or call the IRS at 1-800-908-4490 to have your IP PIN mailed to you (this can take up to 21 days).

To enter this in your return:

  1. Open your return
  2. Go to IP PIN
  3. On the Identity Protection PIN screen, answer Yes. Select Add and enter your IP PIN in the space provided.
    • If you need to remove the IP PIN, select the trash icon.
  4. Select Continue, then select Done.
