Will I be taxed on money I received from a lien paid through the sale of my ex husband’s home?

My husband did not pay alimony stated in our divorce decree. Through a lawyer, I put a lien on his home. He is now selling his house. Will I owe money on the money I am paid from the sale of his house?

Assuming the payment you receive from the sale of the house is to satisfy the alimony obligation, whether or not it is taxable is dependent on the date the divorce was finalized. If the date of finalization was January 1, 2019 or later, the alimony received will not be taxable. If December 31, 2018 or earlier, it is taxable to the recipient and deductible to the payor.
