Widow Filing Status, spouse died 2021, not remarried, but dependent child

How do you file Federal Taxes if your husband died in 2021, not remarried, and you have a dependent child? What is your filing status?

You would file as Single.  However, since you have a dependent child and assume that you are providing over one-half the cost to maintain the home, you should be legible for Head of Household filing status.  The TurboTax program will ask a series of questions after you have selected your filing status and have entered the child as a dependent to determine if you are eligible for HOH.

See this TurboTax support FAQ for head of household - https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-filing-status/qualify-head-household-2021/L0NxUtVc2_US_en_US?uid=m8apb4ue

The filing status will be single or head of household depending on your situation. Married filing jointly or Qualified Surviving Spouse is no longer an option. See the article below for details about the head of household filing status.

TurboTax will guide you when completing your Personal Information section.
