Why was my return more than what was filed?

If your refund was different from what you filed you will get a letter from the IRS explaining the discrepancy. 

Could be many reasons.  Could you have left off some payments like estimated payments you made?  Did you have a penalty on 1040 line 38?  They might have reduced it.   Or maybe they paid you some interest on your refund.
