Why was my return in 2017 filed using 1040A and filed in 2018 as 1040?

The reason is that tax law changes have eliminated Forms 1040EZ and 1040A.  The new Form 1040 uses a “building block” approach, in which the tax return is reduced to a simple form. That form can be supplemented with additional schedules if needed. Taxpayers with straightforward tax situations would only need to file this new 1040 with no additional schedules.
