Why was I charged so much to file my taxes? I opted only for the basic/minimum service. It looks like I was charged for an additional service which I didn’t want.

Free Edition is free as long as you file a 1040EZ (or 1040A with the standard deduction) and don't need to select any add-ons or upgrades. See the following to see if the Free Edition is right for your tax situation:
