Why the amount Turbotax populated on "Refunds Received for State/Local Tax Returns" does not match my actual state refund?

This could occur if you entered a 1099-G and an amount from the prior year transferred over into this year's return. If you did enter a 1099-G, please delete the 1099-G using the instructions below. The state and local tax refund entry does need to be corrected as it may affect your taxable income calculations if you itemized your deductions in 2020.

To delete a 1099-G form, please follow the instructions below:

  1. While in your return, click on Tax Tools > Tools (in the black bar at the side of your screen).
  2. In the Tools Center, under Other helpful links click on Delete a form.
  3. Click Delete next to the form you want to delete and follow the onscreen instructions.
  4. Once you have finished deleting the desired form(s) click the Continue with My Return box (in the lower right of your screen).

To edit the amount of your refund, please follow the instructions below:

  1. Click "Federal" in the left-hand menu
  2. Click the "Income & Expenses" tab
  3. Scroll down to "Other Common Income"
  4. "Show More"
  5. "Start/revisit" the "Refunds Received for State/Local Tax Returns" topic
  6. "Delete" the entry there and finish the interview
  7. "Start/Revisit" the topic again
  8. Re-enter your state refund

Yes, total refund received in 2021 should be your state refund.

Regarding Total of all your payments and withholding, for federal, the amounts are on Form 1040, Line 33.

  • If you need this information for the state, please enter the state you're referring to.
