Why is my Federal return being mailed?

I selected to have my refunds direct deposited. My State refund was deposited directly, but using "Where's My Refund?" shows that my Federal refund was mailed. Why? Every explanation I see says:

There are three possible reasons. They are as follows:

  • We (IRS) can only deposit refunds electronically into accounts in your own name, your spouse's name or in a joint account.
  • A financial institution may reject a direct deposit.
  • We (IRS) can’t deposit more than three electronic refunds into a single financial account."

Well, since my State refund was direct deposited without issue, obviously the information I provided was correct, so the 1st one does not apply. Looking into the 2nd possibility, it pretty much says a financial institution will only reject a direct deposit if the information does not match what is on the account. Which again, does not apply. And I am only receiving 1 refund from State, and 1 from Fed, so the 3rd does not apply either. So why is my Federal refund being mailed?

UPDATE: I received a letter from the IRS stating: “We had to do some additional processing on your tax return. Therefore, we weren’t able to honor your request for direct deposit of your tax refund and are sending you a check instead.”

Occasionally there are unexpected and unexplained hiccups in the direct deposit process. If it doesn't work the first time, the IRS mails a check.

Did you e-file or file by mail? If you mailed your tax return it's possible that the IRS data entry clerk who entered your tax return made a mistake entering the direct deposit information. A mistake at the IRS would not affect your state refund.

You would need to contact the IRS directly in regards to why your refund is being mailed.  Please see the following directions to reach out to the IRS:

IRS: 800-829-1040

Hours: 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM (local time zone)

Monday-Friday

  • Listen to each menu before making the selection.
  • First, choose your language. Press 1 for English.
  • Then do NOT choose the first choice re: "Refund", or it will send you to an automated phone line.
  • Instead, press 2 for "personal income tax".
  • Then press 1 for "form, tax history, or payment".
  • Then press 3 "for all other questions."
  • Then press 2 "for all other questions."  It should then transfer you to an agent.

Or, you can visit your local IRS Office.

Thank you. Do you know about how many days it usually takes to arrive after the date mailed?

Yep. My main "overview" page says it will be direct deposited, too.
