Why is "free" $60.00? + $40 for State? We cannot afford this, we are retired on Social Security + $1600 non-exempt What needs to change to be free - or under $30?

If your AGI is under $34,000 you can use the TurboTax Freedom Edition.  This is completely free regardless of forms used as long as you income qualify. You may have to create a new account to use this to file.

However, based on your numbers posted, you would not need to file a return at all if you have no other income.
