Why doesn't TurboTax allow me to e-file Hawaii return and pay balance due with direct debit? It's telling me to pay by check.

You are able to pay your balance due to the State of Hawaii by either mailing it in with a Payment Voucher or creating an account and Paying Online.

Thanks for the information. I am dismayed that Turbo Tax put my bank name, routing number, and my account # in the state filing screen, yet I can't pay by direct withdrawal. Why would TurboTax ask for that info, and have me confirm the data if I can't pay by direct withdrawal? This seems a glitch to me and is confusing.

I called about this on Monday and spoke with a Turbo Tax 20 year CPA who told me that I needed to mail a check because the state of Hawaii does not accept electronic payments.  So I sent a check with the voucher Turbo Tax told me to print out and then this morning I saw that my bank had been debited because of me putting in my bank information in Turbo Tax to electronically pay.  So I basically paid twice.  Luckily I was able to put a stop payment on the check I wrote.  Turbo Tax needs to get their act together regarding this subject.

Ran into the same problem.  TurboTax asked for and required me to enter all my bank information for direct payment from the bank and then after filing I was told I had to issue a check and pay by voucher.  For the time being I am going to wait and see if my account gets debited as it should before I send a check...double paying.

I agree TurboTax has a problem they need to fix.

I ran into this problem also. I entered all the bank information and selected to pay both the Federal and State. After all that appeared to go through, it said Don't forget to print and mail the Hawaiii form.  I figured it was just an informational form. but it was a pre-filled Form N-200V, which is a Payment Voucher, and it says to include a check in the instructions.  But I believe I already paid in on Turbotax.  I will wait a couple of days to mail this in to see if it comes out of my bank account.

PS: I called Turbotax and she could not find any information about this issue, and told me to call [phone number removed], to ask the State of Hawaii Department of Taxation this question.

I'm in the same situation.  I opted to pay $25 to e-File for Hawaii.  I entered my info for electronic payment from my bank.  At the end, Turbo Tax still wanted me to mail in the N-200V form (Individual Income Tax Payment Voucher) and instructions in it doesn't account for folks that payed electronically.   So do I need to just send in the voucher without a check or include a memo that I had already opted to pay electronically?

I know it's probably not entirely Turbo Tax's fault but also the State of Hawaii for not making their documentation clearer.

Luckily, I can wait a few days to make sure my e-payment goes through or not.  Turbo Tax needs to remove the need to mail in the voucher if we opt to pay electronically.

The same thing happened to me for the 2021 tax year.   I contacted the State of Hawaii taxation in Hilo and they looked up my SSN and confirm that the debit payment did actually go through from the bank information I had entered in Turbo Tax.

I am having the same issue. Did your debit payment went through?

Yes, mine went through using bank transfer of funds so I won’t be mailing in my voucher.

The same question in 2020 has not been resolved by Intuit Turbotax. It is 2025 and Turbotax is still asking for bank information to pay the taxes due by direct debit.  After giving out bank information, then came the message a day later that I needed to mail my payment with Form N-200V.  I will wait and check my bank for any debit after a few days.

If you entered your bank information on your return.  It was probably set up as an electronic payment.  You can review your state return and that information should be there.

When will my tax payment go through?

How do I change my IRS payment date?

This problem has been ongoing for several years and TurboTax still hasn't fixed it.  I just e-filed (4/1/25) my Hawaii 2024 taxes with Turbo Tax and it still is asking me to print out the payment voucher and send a check even though I opted to pay with direct debit.  There is no reason why this shouldn't have been fixed by now, except that Intuit doesn't care............  I'll wait to see if Hawaii debits my account, but I'm betting they will.

Yup, Hawaii correctly took my payment with direct debit within a couple of days after I e-filed with TT.  The TT message saying you have to print the payment voucher and send a check is WRONG and has been for years.  Does anyone at Intuit care about this??????

If you would like us to troubleshoot this issue, you can send us a “diagnostic” file that has your “numbers” but not your personal information. If you would like to do this, here are the instructions for TurboTax Desktop users:

  1. From the black bar at the top of your screen, select Online
  2. Click Send Tax File to Agent
  3. Click Send on the message that pops up
  4. TurboTax will create a "sanitized" copy of your return information with no personal info
  5. Post the 7-digit token number here in this thread

Here are the instructions for TurboTax Online users:

Go to the black panel on the left side of your program and select Tax Tools.

  1. Then select Tools below Tax Tools.
  2. A window will pop up which says Tools Center.
  3. On this screen, select Share my file with Agent.
  4. You will see a message explaining what the diagnostic copy is. Click okay through this screen and then you will get a Token number.
  5. Reply to this thread with your Token number. This will allow us to open a copy of your return without seeing any personal information.

We will then be able to review your file to see what you are seeing, and we can determine what is going on in your return and provide you with a suggested resolution.

We at Intuit TurboTax want our users to be completely delighted with their experience using our products and services, and successful in their financial lives and businesses.

Once you file your return, as long as the settings to receive communication from Intuit don’t block it, you will see a pop-up message or receive an email with a survey asking you about your experience. We encourage you to leave your notes and comments there. “Voice of the Customer” notes and comments are read and acted upon.

If you are using TurboTax Desktop, you can also leave feedback at the Final Steps tab:

2025 and the problem persists.  What's worse is that I just got the runaround on their chat and call service.  Fortunately, I got lucky and talked to someone who had the info and gave me a quick answer.  The N-200V form will pop up regardless of whether you had Turbo Tax pay your Hawaii taxes.  She advised however, that you still mail in the form (no payment since TT will pay it eventually) with a note saying it will be paid by TT through auto withdraw from your bank.  They really need to fix this problem.

The Hawaii Department of Revenue provides that you can use Hawaii Tax Online to make a payment (1) from your checking or saving account (free) or (2) using a credit or debit card payment (fees apply). You may also pay by Automated Clearing House (ACH) credit by following these instructions to work with your bank.

Some individual states had prevented direct debits through tax software, even though they were accepted at their websites, which was why TurboTax had left the voucher in the program.  I am raising the issue regarding Hawaii for further review. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

Update:

Thank you for bringing this up. Thanks to you, we've discovered that there is a contradictory message after the tax return is transmitted and a direct debit is selected. Our tech team is working on it and will have it fixed. You do not need to mail the payment with a voucher if your already paid the tax by direct debit.
