Why does turbo tax consider me self employed? I have been retired for over 20 years.

Did you enter some income on a 1099NEC?    You are posting from online Self-Employed---so it might have upgraded you for something you entered.   If you did not receive self-employment income and want to downgrade then clear and start over.

I don't remember ever receiving a 1040NEC.  I'll have to try to find out what a 1040NEC is.  The option to start over from scratch does not seem to be a viable alternative.

Thanks for the quick answer!

A 1099NEC is issued to an independent contractor for non-employee compensation.   Did you work as a consultant or something?    it is okay to use the Self-Employed version of the software---it just costs a bit more--so if you do not want to start over....

xmasbaby0.  Thanks for the help.  I'll stick with the self-employed version.

Go to forms and select the Personal Wks for you. Look at what is entered in Occupation. If it doesn't say Retired, change it. Hope that helps.

@JonTerry The entry for occupation has no effect at all on how a tax return is calculated or on what version of the software is used.   The IRS only uses "occupation" for statistical purposes.
