Why do i need to upgrade to Deluxe? I don't have unemployment or paid family leave benefits.

There is a flaw in TurboTax. People with unemployment income or paid family leave benefits should not be required to upgrade to Deluxe. Bug in TurboxTax.

@saji-john123  I don't work for TT. I'm just trying to help you out.

TT FREE  is only for :

simple tax returns

Situations covered by TurboTax Free Edition, TurboTax Live Basic, and TurboTax Live Full Service Basic

  • W-2 income
  • Limited interest and dividend income reported on a 1099-INT or 1099-DIV
  • Claiming the standard deduction
  • Earned Income Tax Credit (EIC)
  • Child tax credits
  • Student Loan Interest deduction

Situations NOT covered by TurboTax Free Edition, TurboTax Live Basic, and TurboTax Live Full Service Basic

  • Itemized deductions
  • Unemployment income reported on a 1099-G
  • Business or 1099-NEC income
  • Stock sales
  • Rental property income
  • Credits, deductions and income reported on schedules 1-3

Here is where to get the free edition:

https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/online/free-edition.jsp

Be careful with how you answer the interview questions as you will be upgraded if you answer that you have something not included in the free edition.

The other editions are here:

TT is not following its own guidelines when it prompts you to upgrade for Deluxe because you have unemployment income. I select "NO" but still prompts you to upgrade for an income type I don't have. This is an obvious software bug. Can someone from TT look into?

It's not a glitch they did it on purpose. Just file online with H&R Block it's free to file even with a 1099-G. I think they're just trying to get money out of people so I switched. I had filed with them for 8 years too. What a shame.

If you had unemployment income in a prior year then TurboTax has rolled the information over from one year into the next and thinks that you have it.  You just have to delete that rolled over info.

Go to the section of Wages & Income for Unemployment Compensation and click the little garbage can to the right of the form you entered last year.  If that doesn't work you can delete the form directly-

 To Delete a form:

  1. Select Tax Tools from the menu on the left
  2. Then select Tools
  3. When the new menu pops up select Delete a Form
  4. You will see a list of all the forms in your return
  5. Find the form that you want to delete
  6. Select the Form
  7. Click Delete on the right

Tax forms are interconnected.  While you are in this screen don’t start deleting forms you don’t recognize.
