Why do I need the last four digits of a zip code? It's not included on my 1098-T form

The truth is that you really don't absolutely need a full 9-digit ZIP code for the IRS to process your tax return, or your 1098-T information.  The government would still be able to identify your school without it.  However, if the software requires a full 9-digit ZIP code in US Postal service format -- or if you ever need to verify a complete and accurate postal mailing address for any reason -- then here's an easy solution.  Just visit the following internet webpage (a clickable link follows) to access the US Postal Service's ZIP code finder tool:

https://tools.usps.com/go/ZipLookupAction_input

Then, simply type in whatever address information you do have for your target, and the tool will return with an answer in just seconds, giving you the standardized street mailing address plus 9-digit ZIP code.  With that information in hand, you'll have what you need to proceed.  It just takes a moment or two.

Thank you for your question, and we apologize for any inconvenience.
