The Individual Shared Responsibility Payment, this has been reduced to $0 for 2019. In the past, Form 8965 was required if you did not have healthcare coverage, but the form is no longer needed on your return. If you did not have healthcare coverage in 2019, you no longer need to report that or list an exemption on the healthcare requirement.

However, if you purchased insurance through the marketplace and received a 1095-A, that must still be reported on your return. This will calculate the Net Premium Tax Credit on Form 8962. This form reconciles the amount of the credit available to you with the amount already received as an Advance Premium Tax Credit. The result could be additional credit owed to you, or you may have to repay any amount already received in advance. Because of either of these results, it is important for taxpayers to include the information from Form 1095-A on their return.

Only the 1095-A needs to be entered on your return from insurance purchased through the marketplace. If you received a different 1095 form, such as one from employer benefits, you do not need to enter anything on your return. It is for your records only.

If you have a 1095-A to enter, log into your TurboTax account and follow these steps:

  • Click on Deductions & Credits under Federal
  • Under the menu for Medical, click Start/Revisit next to Affordable Care Act (Form 1095-A)
  • Answer Yes indicating that you have the form to enter
  • Complete the information on the next screen to match your form and click continue

None of this helps me now. Why wasn't I prompted when filling out my return?

If your return has not been submitted, see this FAQ regarding Where to enter your 1095-A.

Same here. It's prompted me every year except this one so I didn't enter it. Now my refund has been delayed god knows how long. Oh and why did turbo tax make me pay an additional 60 bucks to file this form with the IRS. So all together my returns cost me 150.00 dollars this year.

While it is now something to keep in mind to watch for next time, you can still take action to speed up your refund.

The IRS needs Form 8962. You can mail or fax it to the IRS while you are waiting.

Here is an article about How to get this form in TurboTax: The IRS is requesting Form 8962.
