Why did turbotax choose the NYC school tax credit fixed amount deduction last year, when this year they pick the much larger rate reduction, with similar incomes?

I lived in NYC for the full 2 years. Was turbotax mistaken last year, resulting in picking the non optimal option? There isn't even a field where the user can choose which one to pick so that can't come from the user...

I can't access your tax information, so I can't analyze why this year is different from last year.

I can explain the basic requirements for the rate reduction credit.

  • If you income is more than $500,000, you are not eligible.
  • You must file as Single, Head of Household or Married filing jointly.
  • You must be a resident or part year resident of NYC.

If you think you were eligible for the rate reduction last year as well, you can amend your 2018 tax return.
