Why can't I enter income information on page 1 of my 1040? It is entered elsewhere, so why won't it let me edit the very first page?

Because all those numbers come from Worksheets and Schedules and you need to go to those sources to make your edits . In most cases, those same sources are also used for other forms and worksheets,
