Why am I paying tax on $19,000 when I made less then $12,000

We cannot see your screen or your tax return.  We do not know what you entered or where you are seeing the amounts you mentioned.  Have you checked and double checked all the income amounts that you entered?  Did you look for typos, missed decimals or extra zeros?    Did you receive any taxable scholarship money?

Do you have other income, any self-employment?   If not, go back and review your entries, you probably have a typo(s).
