Only certain paid tax pros can still e-file past year amended returns. You cannot e-file an amended 2021 return that you prepared yourself using TurboTax.  Your 1040X must be printed, signed and dated in ink, and then you need to mail it in.  Use a mailing service like certified mail so you will know the IRS received it, since you will have a long wait for it to be processed.

You can watch for information here:

My 2022 1040X was efiled by TurboTax without any problem.  Apparently, there was a deadline for efiling 2021 1040X.

Not sure of reason for deadline in 2022.

The IRS reported that efiling of 1040X  should be available for last 3 years.

I remember having a similar question last year and, after some research, concluded that turbo tax doesn't support everything the IRS does when it comes to e-file.  I was able to find other (expensive in my view) services that allow it but chose to paper file.

@GERR Only some paid tax professionals who are using professional software are able to e-file past year returns.   Users who are using TurboTax do-it-yourself tax software cannot e-file past year returns.   TT users can only e-file current year returns.

...AND the 2022 1040X can still be e-filed...because 2022 is the current "tax year" that is being prepared.

Not sure when exactly TTX shuts down the ability to do 2022 tax year 1040X e-files...but sometime after the week of 16 October of 2023.

Thanks for all the responses.

TT should update their website information and the desktop software to explicitly state that you CANNOT e-file 1040X for years prior to current tax season.  Here it implies that you can:

Can I e-file my federal Form 1040-X amended return?

Your 2022, 2021, or 2020 federal Form 1040-X amended return may be eligible for electronic filing if the original return was successfully e-filed using TurboTax. However, there is a chance your return cannot be electronically filed. If this happens, you'll need to print and mail your tax return.

  • Yes, I saw that.  It implies there was a chance my 2021 1040X could still be efiled, but alas no such luck.  Too many ambiguities in Turbotax system.

Professional software can efile prior year returns. Do it yourself software doesn’t allow that option yet. Industry wide.

The IRS website says: https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/about-form-1040x

Electronic Filing Now Available for Form 1040-X

You can now file Form 1040-X electronically with tax filing software to amend 2019 or later Forms 1040 and 1040-SR, and 2021 or later Forms 1040-NR. For more details, see our June 2022 news release on this topic.

Nowhere in that June 2022 news release does it say professional tax preparers - only tax payers.
