Why am I getting a refund? I'm a single dude who works a regular job. I'm genuinely confused, and don't know if I should be scared of filing this application.

I'm sure you had taxes withheld on your W-2.

If the taxes withheld were more than your tax liability, you will get a refund.

As a VERY SIMPLE check-

Look at your 1040

Is your income listed and totaled (line 11)

Is line 15 your income less the Standard Deduction?

Tax is listed on line 16

Look at your W-2 and compare your tax with what was withheld

If that looks fine, you are good to go.

If not, you my have gotten a credit, such as the Earned Income credit listed on Line 27
