Why am I being penalized of not having medical insurance in 2017, even though I was fully covered for 2017? How can this be corrected?

If you are seeing a penalty for not having health insurance and everyone on your return had it, it is likely that the question for insurance was skipped or answered incorrectly.

If you had insurance NOT through the marketplace do the following:

  1. Click on Federal Taxes
  2. Click on Health Insurance
  3. Select We all had Health Insurance coverage all year click continue
  4. Answer yes or no to whether anyone was covered by any of these plans in 2017
  5. click continue

If you did have insurance through the marketplace then you will need to answer YES to "was anyone covered by any of these plans in 2017" and enter your 1095-A information on the next screens.  If you did enter a 1095-A and had a Premium Tax Credit, it is possible that you are not paying a penalty, but instead, are having to pay back a portion of the Advanced Premium Tax Credit that was more than you should have received.
