It is possible that you may have added an add on that required an upgrade or an extra charge. To see what you are being charged for please follow the instructions in the following FAQ.

If you have not yet filed your tax return, then proceed to follow the directions in the FAQ below to remove all unwanted add ons.

I have a simple return, wages, no deductions one state. Why did I have to pay $110 for this? Is this a "bait and switch?"

A simple tax return is Form 1040 only, without any additional schedules. Situations covered include:

  • W-2 income
  • Limited interest and dividend income reported on a 1099-INT or 1099-DIV
  • Claiming the standard deduction
  • Earned Income Tax Credit (EIC)
  • Child tax credits

If being charged $150 for a simple return then a simple fix is to use H&R Block where they don't try to sneak fees in. All charges are disclosed before you even enter your information allowing you an "informed" decision vs being forced to pay for something you don't need or want.

Move on over to H&R Block or you can do your taxes FREE on the IRS website.

Perhaps there was a stray entry that caused the upgrade. You visited an interview and just clicked into a box may have caused a form to generate that you don't need.  Try this to see what forms are in your return.

1.  Click "Tax Tools" in the left hand menu

2.  Click "Tools" in the left hand menu

3.  Click "View Tax Summary" in the center screen

4.  Click "Preview My 1040" in the left hand menu

5.  Now you can scroll to see what forms are in your returns.

If you find schedules created with no numbers, post that information and someone will help you clear it.

If you find schedules with amounts then that will explain the upgrade.
