Are you aware of what the IRS is trying to resolve? Have you received a CP notice or other letter from the IRS?

The IRS was closed for return processing for some time to focus on the economic stimulus payments. They have resumed normal operations and are now processing returns. You will have to be patient as the IRS works on getting caught up. Continue to track the progress through the IRS Check my Refund Status link.

No letter yet. That is supposed to go out after 6 weeks if they need something. I was told that being a "non-filer" caused some type of issue using this system instead of their non-filer portal, but this Error Resolution Department should be able to fix it. It is just going to take time for them to get to it. It has already been over 50 days.

I understand your frustration at the long delay.

You may be able to get some assistance from the Taxpayer Advocate's office, although they are partially shut down as well.

You can reach them at their website: Taxpayer Advocate Service

Or their phone number: 877-777-4778

Best of luck on getting this resolved.

The Tax Advocacy department only want to advocate if you have an economic need, not an un resolved problem even though that's what the its website says.

Issue still not resolved with the IRS.

Pretty frustrating, it's been over 80 days.

Were you finally able to get your refund? Or make any headway?

I filed July 8, and have yet to receive my refund or any word from the IRS. I was told during my last phone call of many, that my return has been in "error resolution" for 99+ days. I filed all paperwork, with no errors, and can't get a straight answer from anyone.

Nope. Stuck in purgatory. Just going to have to get it, and the 2nd stimulus on my 2020 taxes.

I don't know if I want to use TurboTax this time, not to blame them. Just don't want the same result this year.

Never got a notice from the IRS, only info I could get was from calling in every few months.

Finally got someone to escalate after months of no one helping or having info by having a request for a supervisor to call me when trying to schedule appointment for in person IRS help that was denied. This one of the rare times they will call you, and verify your info on the call (which is strange at first since that's exactly what you would think a scammer would do, but the scammer wouldn't know you requested the supervisor call back).

I was told I should now receive a letter or the issue corrected with the escalation.

I ran into the same scenario as you, hopefully yours resolves quicker. I filed in April and in November contacted IRS for escalation and Senators office (they referred me to Tax Payer advocate). Multiple correspondents and "escalations" with all 3 since then and still no resolution. Newest update from Tax Payer advocate (I've been told different things by different people) is that the errors and resolutions department was closed since Covid started and only recently opened up and has a huge backlog. The Taxpayer Advocate put in an Operations assistance request with a request for resolution by February.

IRS is the owner of the issue and therefore able to help.  Unfortunately, IRS has not been operating at full capacity since March 2020.  They are still short staffed plus added responsibilities of issuing Stimulus checks.  However, you said you are working with the Taxpayer Advocate which is the best assistance for your issue.  Keep in touch with them for updates on your case.

As sleazyone666 notes, you may be in for a wait.  However, the Taxpayer Advocate assists taxpayer with their federal tax issues, not their state issues.

Please see the TurboTax Help article How Can the Taxpayer Advocate Service Help Me? and the IRS's Taxpayer Advocate Service page for information.

Also you can call all day long and wont get anywhere with the irs i have called them for a year and still nothing i contacted a tax advocate and since you said you have bills piling that should be considered a hardship it might make it faster for them to process what i dont understand is we have to have our taxes filed by april 15th or we have to pay a penalty or late fee for filing late but the irs doesnt have to process your stuff by that time

As mentioned earlier in this thread, if you’re having tax problems because of financial difficulties or immediate threat of adverse action and you haven’t been able to resolve them with the IRS the Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS) may be able to help you.  Click this link for more information:  Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS)

You also may wish to contact your local IRS office.  Please go to the IRS website page for information on contacting a local office:  Contact Your Local IRS Office

My return has been stuck for a year so maybe you should try and get a tax advocate they might be able to help get it moving faster if your lucky ihave been told that the urs is behind on the 2019 tax refunds which is odd if they are processing 2020 tax returns

You should contact the IRS on the status of your return.  To contact the IRS, please review the steps and information below:

IRS Support Number: (800) 829-1040

To reach a live agent at the IRS support number, follow these steps:

1.      Select your preferred language.

2.      Press 2 for “Personal Income Tax”

3.      Press 1 for “Form, Tax History, or Payment”

4.      Press 3 for “All Other Questions”

5.      Press 2 for “All Other Questions”

6.      Do not enter your SSN or EIN. It will ask you twice; do not enter anything.

7.      Press 2 for “Personal or Individual Tax Questions”

They are available Monday through Friday, from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. local time (Alaska & Hawaii follow Pacific Time).

I ended up filling 2020 returns, and getting everything on that. Now waiting for that to go thru.  IDK if they will ever get to my 2019. I haven't heard back from them, or received anything in the mail. If you go the advocate route you have to say you are in economic need otherwise they can't help you much.
