Any version you want. They all handle 1099-R income just fine.

Unless there is an early distribution penalty, then Deluxe or higher.

The reason is to report an early withdrawal penalty you need form 5329 and the 1040 form line 59 to report it.  The Free edition is only for simple 1040EZ/A forms that do not have line 59.

Can one use the Basic version if they have a 1099-R where part of the distribution was returned back, creating a rollover and not a withdrawn early situation?  So basically my question is, will the Basic version allow us to enter the amount on the 1099-R that was returned within the 60days alotted?

Yes, there are follow up questions where you can indicate that you rolled it over. That does not require an upgrade from Deluxe.

Do I understand your answer correctly, we need the Deluxe version if we have a 1099-R?

I do not know which document to fill out if I only have a 1099-R!  Do I use a 1040 or another document?

Yes, you would file a 1040.

Please complete the following steps to enter your 1099-R:

  1. Open your return.
  2. Search 1099-R with the magnifying glass tool on top of the page.
  3. Click on the Jump to 1099-R link at the top of the results.
  4. Answer yes to the question Did you get a 1099-R in 2020?
  5. Click continue to the page Get ready to be impressed.
  6. If you want to import your tax information, you can enter your bank name in the search box. If not, click on Change how I enter my form.
  7. If you are not bringing it over from your bank, you can upload it from your computer or phone with a PDF, JPG, or PNG file.
  8. Click continue
  9. Follow the on-screen instructions.
