Where to find the math details behind Form 1040, Line 1a? Is there a worksheet?

Hello,

My 1040 Line 1a has been adjusted.  It is not just the total of our W2, Box 1 (MFJ).  This is correct because I have an amount shown in W2, Box 11, and it must be subtracted from Line 1a, but included on 1040, Schedule 1, Line 8t.

Where in TurboTax can I see the math and details behind the amount calculated for Line 1a.  I have followed the links into the various worksheets, but I can not find where the subtractions (or additions for some people) are shown.  I am specifically interested to see where the Box 11 value is subtracted.

To be clear... I believe that TT is doing the right thing, but I can not see where the calc/math is being done.  This is important when explaining to others why their results are what they are.  I help a number of retired persons with their taxes, and they use TT.

Thanks,

To see the calculations you can do this easiest by using the desktop version.  Using the desktop version, you can

  1. Go to Forms Mode
  2. Right click on the number in question
  3. Select Data Source
  4. this will take you to the form that is generating the numbers

If you are using the online version, you would need to go to the print center to see the forms and worksheets.  This can only be done after you pay for the product. You would likely see this on the W-2 worksheet.  However, if you want to routinely see the "why" for the calculation, the desktop version will be much more helpful.
