Where to file income (and tax withheld) from Form 1042-S income code 17 (Compensation for Independent Personal Services)?

My wife did some consulting work for US universities. We file a US tax report because we own rental properties in the US. Where should we add the info from form 1042-S? It is not technically a self-employment situation, since the Universities pays (rather than my wife invoicing them), but it is not a w2, so not sure what category of "wage and income" it should be reported under.

File this income using the steps below.

1-This income can be entered as miscellaneous income.

  1. Select "Income & Expenses"
  2. Scroll and click "See the list of all income"
  3. Scroll to "Less Common Income" and select "show more"
  4. Select "Miscellaneous Income"
  5. Scroll and select "Other Reportable Income"
  6. Click "yes" then enter the description (1042-S)and amount (this will show up on Schedule 1, Part I, Line 8z then carried to Form 1040)

2-Enter the federal and/or state withholding here:

  • Deductions and credits >  Other income taxes > Yes > Other income taxes paid in 2024Withholding not already entered on a W2 or 1099
  • Continue to enter your withholding

You should file your return by mail so the Form 1042S can be attached.
